Technical Architecture

Understanding WebP to GIF In-Memory Conversion

Converting WebP Image Format (WebP) to Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) involves a transformation between two specialized encoding specifications. WebP combines lossy predictive coding from the VP8 video codec with lossless arithmetic LZ77 compression. It supports 8-bit alpha transparency and animation in a unified compact container.

GIF provides frame-by-frame timed animation with 1-bit transparency and an indexed 256-color palette, compressed using patent-free LZW encoding.

Unlike traditional file conversion utilities that transmit sensitive files across the public internet to third-party server farms, MixConvert processes your data locally inside your web browser sandbox using compiled WebAssembly workers. Processed through libwebp WebAssembly binaries executing multithreaded block quantizations directly inside your browser sandbox. Frames are extracted or rasterized in local WebAssembly memory, color-quantized using NeuQuant, and packaged into standard GIF89a blocks. Once you close the browser tab, all temporary memory buffers are completely garbage collected.
