Technical Architecture

Understanding GIF to PNG In-Memory Conversion

Converting Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) to Portable Network Graphics (PNG) involves a transformation between two specialized encoding specifications. GIF provides frame-by-frame timed animation with 1-bit transparency and an indexed 256-color palette, compressed using patent-free LZW encoding.

PNG applies five adaptive 2D spatial filtering algorithms (None, Sub, Up, Average, Paeth) row-by-row before executing Deflate compression, guaranteeing bit-for-bit lossless accuracy.

Unlike traditional file conversion utilities that transmit sensitive files across the public internet to third-party server farms, MixConvert processes your data locally inside your web browser sandbox using compiled WebAssembly workers. Frames are extracted or rasterized in local WebAssembly memory, color-quantized using NeuQuant, and packaged into standard GIF89a blocks. Decoded into raw pixel buffers and encoded via canvas 2D contexts or browser-native compression streams without server requests. Once you close the browser tab, all temporary memory buffers are completely garbage collected.
