Technical Architecture

Understanding AVIF to GIF In-Memory Conversion

Converting AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) to Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) involves a transformation between two specialized encoding specifications. AVIF packages AV1 intra-frames inside an ISOBMFF container, providing cutting-edge compression ratios and wide-color-gamut HDR color handling.

GIF provides frame-by-frame timed animation with 1-bit transparency and an indexed 256-color palette, compressed using patent-free LZW encoding.

Unlike traditional file conversion utilities that transmit sensitive files across the public internet to third-party server farms, MixConvert processes your data locally inside your web browser sandbox using compiled WebAssembly workers. Processed via in-browser libavif WebAssembly builds or native browser ImageDecoder APIs directly in local memory. Frames are extracted or rasterized in local WebAssembly memory, color-quantized using NeuQuant, and packaged into standard GIF89a blocks. Once you close the browser tab, all temporary memory buffers are completely garbage collected.
